The most important step in the adoption process is selecting the perfect adoptive couple to raise your child. As the birth mother (and birth father, if available), you have complete control over the decision. You are in the driver’s seat.
Selecting The Adoptive Parents
Potential couples go through an intense process to be qualified to adopt. They have a home study to ensure their home and other family members are ready to receive a child. They complete criminal background checks, answer questionnaires, and provide financial statements and health records.
At Adoption Angels, we match expectant mothers when they are 20 weeks into their pregnancy. You choose your adoptive family by viewing detailed photo books of families that meet your preferences. Choosing the right family can be the most rewarding part of the adoption process.
Our potential adoptive families are from all over the U.S. You will work with your adoption counselor, who walks you through the selection process.
Talk to your counselor about your dreams for your child. Do you want them to have siblings? What about pets? Maybe having a particular religious belief or the opportunity for a college education is important. By telling your counselor what’s essential to you, they’ll be able to show you adoptive family profiles that closely match your requests.
Choose Your Adoption Plan
The amount of contact you want to have with the adoptive couple and your child determines your adoption plan. Today, the majority of adoptions are open. Open adoption means you and the adoptive family share identifying information.
Together, you decide how you want to stay in contact. Is it phone calls, texts, or emails? You can even arrange personal visits.
If you decide you don’t want one-on-one contact, you can choose a semi-open adoption plan, where you receive pictures and letter updates twice a year till your child is 18. If you prefer more of a closed adoption with no contact or updates, that’s perfectly fine too. We can even choose a family for you. It’s whatever is best for you.
After The Match
You and the adoptive family you select agree on your relationship during the pregnancy, your time at the hospital, and after placement. Per your agreement, you receive pictures and updates of your child as they grow.
For the first six months post-placement, the adoptive parents update you monthly. This correspondence continues two times a year until your child reaches 18 years of age. You will likely have more contact if you select an open adoption plan.
In addition to the free living and medical expenses you received during the adoption process, we will continue to provide financial assistance for eight weeks after placement. Counseling before and after placement is available for as long as needed.
